Five Highlights from the 2023 Goldman Environmental Prize

It’s been just over a week since we announced the 2023 Goldman Environmental Prize winners, six ordinary people who took extraordinary actions to protect their environments and communities. Join us in reflecting on some highlights from a whirlwind Prize winner tour.

1. The 2023 Prize Winner Announcement

We were honored to announce the 2023 Goldman Prize winners: Diane Wilson from the United States, Alessandra Korap Munduruku from Brazil, Chilekwa Mumba from Zambia, Tero Mustonen from Finland, Zafer Kizilkaya from Turkey, and Delima Silalahi from Indonesia.

2. The San Francisco Ceremony

Over 2,500 people who care deeply about the environment gathered in-person at the San Francisco Opera House to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of the Goldman Prize winners. The ceremony was hosted by Rue Mapp, founder of Outdoor Afro, an organization dedicated to celebrating Black connections and leadership in nature, and featured live entertainment from Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Aloe Blacc. San Francisco City Hall was lit up in green to celebrate. Watch a livestream of the ceremony on YouTube.

3. The Washington, DC, Ceremony

After a lively ceremony in San Francisco, the Prize winners traveled to Washington, DC, to share their stories with an East Coast audience at the renowned John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The Washington, DC, ceremony was hosted by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Mary Jordan with special remarks by Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi. 

4. Capacity Building and Networking

Throughout the Prize tour, Prize winners had the opportunity to meet with nonprofits, foundations, elected officials, and others to create connections and lay a foundation to advance their goals.

5. Leading Press Coverage

Storytelling about defenders of the planet is critical to generate global awareness and action for our environment.
