2020 Goldman Environmental Prize Postponed

April 2, 2020

Dear Friends,

During the global coronavirus pandemic, we are all learning to adjust, to care for our communities and ourselves, and to plan for an unknown future. In this context, we join much of the world in taking extraordinary measures to adapt, namely: We are postponing the announcement of the Goldman Environmental Prize until a later date, when the crisis has begun to ease. The primary reason for this change is to ensure that we are providing the greatest possible benefit to our phenomenal Prize winners, whose messages and stories deserve the world’s full attention. We will update our community as soon as we have a precise date.

Meanwhile, we want to share with you the thoughts of one of our yet-to-be-announced 2020 Prize winners:

“I am writing to you from my homeland, where the coronavirus disease that endangers our grandparents is now attacking us. We have seen how this virus is spreading worldwide. Hopefully, as humans and as societies, we can finally learn that the path to well-being lies in restoring the balance with the land, with the water, with traditional wisdom.”

The world’s environmental defenders have long taught us about the imperative to maintain and restore humans’ balance with nature, and this seems like a particularly good time to listen to them.

May you all be safe and healthy,

The Goldman Family

Prize Winners Today: Restoring Scotland’s Seas with Howard Wood

September 10, 2024 – By Ellen Lomonico

I met Howard Wood a year ago in Geneva, Switzerland, for a conference hosted by IUCN. As we approached each other in our hotel’s eclectic lobby, Howard’s well-worn Patagonia sweater contrasted sharply with the vibrant pink decor. With bright blue eyes that sparkled from underneath a salt-weathered baseball cap, Howard greeted me with a warm…
