Six Ways to Contribute to a More Sustainable and Resilient World

January 6, 2025

As we start a new year, we’re inspired by Goldman Environmental Prize winners’ commitment to positive action. For more than 35 years, these grassroots heroes have proven that when ordinary people take action, they have the power to turn apathy into progress for the environment. No matter the odds, these individuals know that rolling up your sleeves is the best way to feel empowered and make change: the doing makes the difference!

To kick off 2025, we’ve compiled a list of six impactful ways in which you can help make a difference in your community. We know that change must come from industry, government, and other decision-makers, but there is also a key role for each of us. We invite you to join in—if you haven’t already—in ways big or small:

Support Local and Sustainable Businesses

When possible, plan ahead and take the time to buy from local farmers, artisans, and businesses rooted in your community. The decision to buy local and sustainable not only boosts the local economy but also reduces your carbon footprint.

Learn about Environmental Justice

By understanding how environmental challenges—and harmful development and industry—often disproportionately affect marginalized communities, you can advocate for more inclusive and just solutions in your own backyard.

    Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The “three R’s” are a great way to minimize waste. Reducing your consumption ensures that waste is minimized from the start. Reusing and repurposing can give old items new life. And finally, recycle. Recycling is third to reducing and reusing—it still requires energy and resources to process materials (if they are indeed recyclable—and many are falsely labeled as such), whereas reducing and reusing minimize waste and resource consumption from the outset.

    Educate and Raise Awareness

Share knowledge about sustainability with friends, family, and your community. Use social media platforms to spread awareness about important issues and encourage others to take action. The Goldman Prize Instagram and YouTube channel are great places to start!

    Stay Politically Involved

Be a voice for the planet and its people. Vote for policies and leaders that prioritize environmental protection, restoration, and equitable access to nature. You can also contact your representatives to express your views on important issues, participate in town halls, or join local advocacy groups.

    Rest and Recharge

Rest is a crucial component for maintaining your passion and energy as an everyday activist. Taking time to rest helps prevent burnout, ensuring you can continue your work with renewed optimism and creativity. By prioritizing self-care throughout the new year, you can sustain your efforts for long-term environmental impact.

Join us in making 2025 the year of positive environmental action!
