Profile of Richard N. Goldman to Air on February 1

Snapshot of Family Patriarch’s Philanthropic Inspiration, Philosophy Airs February 1
SAN FRANCISCO – On Sunday, February 1, “Made in the Bay” – a program highlighting innovative people and ideas from the Bay Area – will focus on the life and giving of philanthropist Richard N. Goldman and his world-renowned award, the Goldman Environmental Prize. The documentary-style show will air on NBC Bay Area at 9:30 p.m., following the Super Bowl.
Hosted by actor and environmentalist Peter Coyote, the program offers a glimpse into various aspects of Goldman’s life including his upbringing in San Francisco; love of the great outdoors; marriage to Rhoda Goldman and family life; philanthropic values and accomplishments; and work today.
Producer Wendy Collins’s team shot exclusive footage of Goldman at work, capturing the philanthropist’s insight into the most pressing environmental challenges of our time; and the inspiration behind, and impact of, the Goldman Environmental Prize. Goldman also shares personal anecdotes about meeting some of the world’s preeminent grassroots environmentalists.
Interviews with family members, close friends, colleagues, grant recipients and dignitaries including Mayor Gavin Newsom provide a range of perspectives about Goldman’s legacy and role as a civic leader.

Since its establishment in 1951 by San Francisco philanthropists and civic leaders Richard and Rhoda Goldman, the Goldman Fund has contributed more than $550 million to a variety of charitable causes in San Francisco, as well as nationally and internationally. The Fund supports programs that focus on improving the quality of life in the San Francisco Bay Area, the environment, democracy and civic participation, and Jewish affairs.
In 1990, Richard and Rhoda Goldman established the Goldman Environmental Prize, honoring grassroots environmentalists from around the world. Celebrating its 20th Anniversary in April 2009, the Prize provides an annual award of $150,000 to environmental heroes from each of the world’s six inhabited continental regions.
