Meet the artist behind the opening video for the 2012 Prize ceremony

This week we are spotlighting artist and activist Yann Arthus-Bertrand, the man behind the stunning aerial photography and videography collections that were featured at the 2012 Goldman Prize ceremony.

A View from Home, the opening video used at the ceremony, (created by Mill Valley Film Group), was based on the feature-length film, Home, by Arthus-Bertrand. Home gives audiences an opportunity to see the effects of climate change first-hand, and serves as a reminder of how precious planet Earth is and why it needs protection.

Bertrand, founder of the Goodplanet Foundation, started his journey as an aerial photographer when he worked as a hot air balloon pilot in Kenya. He took the job as a way to make extra cash while he was conducting a 3-year study of lion behavior in the Massaï Mara reserve.

According to his website, “This was when he really discovered the earth from above and the advantages of viewing what he was studying from afar to gain an overall picture of an area and its resources.”
